摘要

Using David Kolb's model of experiential learning, this research explores selected recent findings in neuroscience that can enhance adult learning. Looking at the learning process from the conceptual framework of (a) consilience (linking facts and theories across disciplines), (b) information and knowledge, (c) constructivism, and (d) complex adaptive systems, this research looks at the current state of Kolb's experiential learning model to identify its strengths, weaknesses, and limitations. Although this model has several limitations as cited by past researchers, it was found to still be in widespread use. Then the recent field of neuroscience (roughly the past two decades) was scanned via a literature search for findings related to adult learning. Thirteen areas of neuroscience were found that related to the adult experiential learning process. The question of this research then becomes: Using Kolb's model of experiential learning, how can selected findings in neuroscience enhance adult learning?;An expanded Kolb/Zull Model is developed by combining Kolb's experiential learning model, Zull's physiological overlay, the environment, and each of the 13 areas of neuroscience that could enhance experiential learning. Then models were developed to show the relationship between the subitems of each aspect of the neuroscience areas and each subelement of each of the four modes of the Kolb/Zull model. A table is developed to provide an example of the potential influences of the neuroscience sub-items on the subelements of Kolb's experiential learning model. Tables 2 through 5 identify items outside of the Kolb/Zull model that are related to the environment, Self, continuous learning, and health and exercise. An enhanced Kolb/Zull model was developed to indicate potential relations among the 13 neuroscience subitems, the four modes of Kolb's model, adult learning, and the Self In addition, a concept diagram highlighting some interactions among the neuroscience areas and the enhanced Kolb/Zull model was developed. Each of these figures is accompanied by discussions that explain their relationships to provide the reader with an understanding and appreciation of the complexity and potential value as a complex system supporting the adult learning process---identified in this research as The Intelligent, Self-Organizing Complex Adaptive Learning System or ISOCALS.;This research has led to insights into the potential of neuroscience to support and enhance the efficacy of at least one adult learning model. It has also shown the value of considering adult learning from the inside-out (inside the mind/brain) instead of the outside-in models from education and psychology.;Key Words. Kolb's experiential learning; Kolb/Zull model; Neuroscience and learning; Memory, unconscious; Emotions, epigenetics; Adult learning; Complex adaptive learning system.
