The role of fluid flow on the success of slag cleaning, in a Mitsubishi process slag cleaning vessel was studied. The system was studied using a low temperature, two phase, 1/5 scale, analog model of the slag cleaning furnace at Kidd Creek Mines Division of Falconbridge Ltd.. It was found that the fluid flow patterns present in the system were generated predominantly by momentum transfer from the common slag/matte fluid inlet stream. The greatest mixing in the system was found in the inlet launder and in the region where the inlet fluids waterfall into the slag. The mixing behaviour of the fluids was studied and no significant short-circuiting was found in either phase. The residence time of the slag was found to be adequate to allow matte prill settling.
