Due to the deficiencies of the original provincial forest land use plans (PFLUP) in Indonesia, the Ministry of Forestry of Indonesia revised all the plans using more recent and reliable data. However, the revisions were made by using the same manual methods without any alternative plans as for the original one, even though the appropriate methods for the planning such as using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) were already available.;The purposes of this study are to develop cartographic models for provincial forest land use planning using GIS in Indonesia and to compare the attributes (functional forest areas) determined by the original PFLUP, revised PFLUP, and GIS-PFLUP. The multipurpose forest function in this study classified the forest lands into five management units: nature reserves, protection forest, limited production forest, production forest, and conversion forest. Except for the nature reserve and conversion forest areas which were determined by using the existing maps of previous studies, the other forest functions were determined by a combination of physical attributes (slope, soil types and rainfall intensity) of a large test area in the northern part of Bengkulu province in Sumatera, Indonesia.;The study shows that by using the GIS model developed here, the planners or the decision makers can interactively and iteratively change the criteria to produce the different multipurpose functional forest areas satisfying their objectives. The results of these models then can be used in the more comprehensive forest land use planning where social and economic factors are incorporated in the analyses. The cartographic model used can be updated, and the composing layers can be changed, added or reduced at will depending on the availability and the quality of the data.;Overlaying methods of grid-based layers were used to show the agreements and disagreements of attributes of the three existing planning maps. The results show that there is no significant difference between the area and the distribution patterns of attributes of the original PFLUP from those of the revised PFLUP, but there is a significant difference between those of the original and the revised PFLUP from those of the GIS-PFLUP.
