Precision motor control has until recently only been accomplished by use of DC or synchronous machines. While the performance attained with these machines is good, they are expensive to manufacture, require regular maintenance and have a limited range of speed. Only with the advent of high-power, fast-switching electronic devices in conjunction with fast microprocessors to perform real-time control has it become possible to achieve precise control of an induction motor.;The goal for this project was to review the esoteric theoretical literature to glean sufficient practical information to construct a controller for a real-world application. This controller was developed for United Defense LP. Using a high-performance, digital-signal-processing (DSP) floating-point microprocessor and inexpensive power electronics, the vector control theories were implemented and evaluated. It was demonstrated that it is possible to achieve servo-motor-like control of a two-horsepower induction motor over an extremely wide range of speed. Control strategies for attaining high efficiency were also implemented.
