As the World Wide Web becomes an increasingly legitimate publishing medium, the need for consistency, clarity, and documentation grows. Developers can add depth and long-term utility to their sites by thoroughly documenting their designs. Surprisingly, the style guides used in traditional print design to ensure consistency in the look and feel of all work on a project have yet to be fully integrated into the web design process. To meet this need, the author has proposed a system of organizing, presenting, and locating "meta-information" (as distinct from metadata) about the design process. This system is offered as a tool via the MetaGrrrl web site (http://www.metagrrl.com) including in its presentation the theory and research behind the proposal, an example of its use, templates, feedback and refinements, and an extensive bibliography and "URLography" of sources relating to the issue of documentation of the design process in online environments.
