Climate factors related to Nevada wildland natural fire starts.

Fire seasons in Nevada vary from region to region and from year to year. An important factor which influences the fire season activity level is climate. Atmospheric variables such as temperature, relative humidity and wind will affect both the vegetation state and the potential for thunderstorm development. A better understanding of climate variables in relation to fire start potential will aid forecasters and fire managers during a fire season.;Nevada has many of the key ingredients for fire such as abundant, readily ignitable fuel, warm temperatures, low relative humidities, strong winds and regions of high lightning activity. Each Nevada Bureau of Land Management district examined in this study shows unique anomalous patterns at each level of the atmosphere associated with active and non-active fire start years. In general, active fire start years are characterized by positive temperature and height anomalies at all levels, and positive relative humidity anomalies around the 500 mb level. Non-active fire start years generally have opposite characteristics to those of active years.
