Numerous variables influence the data throughput capability of VHF land mobile radio (LMR) random access networks. Network models that incorporate all these variables can become very complex and time consuming to develop and evaluate. Communications link designers will often omit, modify, and approximate many of these variables in order to facilitate the modelling process. Omitting, modifying, or approximating variables brings into question the accuracy of the network model. The interdependence of VHF LMR random access variables on each other and ultimately on the network's data throughput capability is very complex. As a result of this complex relationship between variables, the effect of variable interdependence on a network's data throughput capability is near impossible to determine without a complete simulation model.;This thesis describes a data throughput measurement methodology suitable for VHF LMR random access networks, identifies the variables that influence the data throughput capability of VHF LMR random access networks, and examines the impact of specific variables on data throughput capability. Although only one VHF LMR random access network configuration was modelled, the results of the model's simulations allow for general observations which may be applied to other VHF LMR random access networks.
