This research provides a model and prototype hybrid intelligent system, which allows U.S. Army engineer officers to conduct rapid military bridge assessments, and aids in making military bridging decisions. The lack of successful techniques, such as hybrid intelligent systems being developed and used in business organizations is discussed. The methodology and model documented fill a void in this research. This research models intelligence by bringing together into one coherent integrated intelligent system, the required military expertise and data for conducting bridge assessments.; Researched were techniques utilizing object-orientation, hyper-navigational and multimedia technology, which integrate sensory process input and recall associated human knowledge to carry out intelligent decisions. Theories were examined on intelligent systems concepts and human understanding and learning processes, which were incorporated into the model design. Additionally, the theory of improving intelligence modeling by offering uninterrupted accessibility via hyper-navigational links to multimedia information, databases, graphics, or knowledge, was also incorporated into the model design.; The current application is specifically prototyped to evaluate the model and the effectiveness of the system. The research methodology began with the analysis, development and validation of military bridging knowledge and procedures. The prototype model is a highly interactive system, with hyperlinks to multimedia databases, embedded programs and graphical representations and/or text screens. The prototype model was tested and validated with personnel from the U.S. Army Engineer School, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Results indicate the proposed model will be a useful decision tool and guide for knowledge-based procedural engineering projects.
