The purpose of this study was to examine how Maurice Durufle was influenced by Gregorian chant practices established by the monks of Solesmes and how the modal properties of these chant themes influenced the compositional techniques he used in his choral works. Particular attention was given to the teachings of Dom Joseph Gajard, who established fundamental principles of the Solesmes method.;Results of this study indicated that as Durufle set his choral compositions on chant themes, he was careful to set syllables off the beat, shifting meters frequently to preserve the free quality of the chant line. Furthermore, in using these chant themes as a cantus firmus, he frequently used the orchestra to play chant quotes, often giving the choir a supportive role throughout his Requiem and Mass. Results led to suggestions on how to conduct these works in a manner consistent with the Solesmes method and, ultimately, with the composer's wishes.
