Advances in programming languages, architecture, hardware and internet technology make the development of complex systems, like an Integrated System for the Analysis-Design-Fabrication-Erection of Steel Structures, for environments with evolving technologies, possible and practical. An object oriented architecture has been developed for the Integrated System that will generate a platform independent program that is readily updateable, managed and integrated. An Object Oriented Handbook and a prototype numerical methods application were developed to illustrate the functionality and versatility of the system architecture. The Object Oriented Handbook includes the development of objects and classes for the Object Oriented Standard, Dynamic Databases, Geometric Tools and an Extended Library for all clauses in CAN/CSA-S16.1-94 related to the stability of beams and beam columns and all referred clauses from CAN/CSA-S136-94. To extend the scope of application of the Standard, a prototype object oriented numerical methods application was developed to determine the resistance of steel members subject to stability failure. Comparisons between the results of the analytical model and existing test data were used to verify the model.
