The effects of iron particles and ultrasound both separately and together on aqueous solutions of 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT), 2,6-dinitrotoluene (2,6-DNT), aniline, chlorobenzene, toluene, and nitrosodimethyl amine (NDMA) were investigated. In addition the combined effects of ferrous chloride and ultrasound on aniline alone were studied. Degradation rate constants for all analytes were determined from batch studies conducted at two standard pHs; 4 and 6. Sonications of samples were performed at 20 and 900 kHz, at power levels of 32.5 and 17.2 W/cm2 respectively.; Comparative analysis of rate constants demonstrated that: (i) ultrasound in water causes degradation of most of the compounds, (ii) the dinitrotoluenes rapidly disappear on treatment with iron, (iii) variations in ultrasonic frequency produced noticeable differences and (iv) there seem to be no synergisms between iron and ultrasound.
