A phenomenological exploration of adult female inmates' experience with participation in educational programs.

The purpose of this study was to explore female inmate stories regarding their perception of an effective teaching and learning environment in correctional education programs. The research explored the learned experiences of nine adult female inmates who were participating in academic programs at a correctional institution in Mississippi. Those inmates were enrolled in classes to prepare for the General Education Degree (GED) test. Data was gathered through interviews. Nine female inmates shared their experiences in this phenomenological study. Data received from the participants was analyzed using the phenomenological data analysis process. Results showed that nine themes emerged from the interviews. Themes that appeared positive included: motivation, learner/teacher interaction, empowerment, helpful learning experience, helpful classroom material, and positive learning environment. Themes that appeared negative included: learning barriers and the detested GED test administration site. In general, the study revealed that the participants learned new academic skills and gained insight about themselves in terms of their ability to learn and succeed while incarcerated. Thus, enrollment in educational programs while incarcerated was described by the participants as beneficial overall.
