The purpose of this research was to study the effect of an acid and two solvents on the "kinetic" weld and the ultrasonic weld shear strengths. The 'kinetic' weld shear strength data were also used to determine the durability of the "kinetic" weld.; The plastic materials chosen were acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), polycarbonate (PC), methylmethacrylate-acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (MABS), and acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate (ASA). The resins selected were each matched to a selected acid or a selected solvent. Test specimens for kinetic and ultrasonic welding were molded, exposed for appropriate spans of time, and tested.; Reduction in the peak load and yield load were observed. The extent of reduction was higher in the first few days or minutes of exposure.
