The Self-Tuning Vibration Absorber (STVA) is a tuned vibration absorber that tunes itself to a range of disturbance frequencies without any controls feedback and without any external energy required. These devices could be useful in canceling or calming the vibrations in structures, particularly in structures that experience a range of vibration frequencies. This dissertation presents a detailed engineering analysis of three different types of STVAs: the Unidirectional STVA, the Orbital STVA, and the Walking Beam STVA. These devices use a combination of cantilever beams, support legs with compliance properties, and asymmetric damping in order to tune to different input frequencies. Complete non-linear models for all three types of STVAs are derived and described. Through a combination of linear and non-linear models the dynamics of these devices are revealed as clearly as possible. In addition, the dynamic performance of a prototype, walking beam STVA was recorded and the results of these tests are given. This dissertation demonstrates the feasibility and the limitations of three different types of STVAs as well as sheds light on the dynamics that make them work.
