A comparison of selected parameters of physical fitness in adults with physical disabilities between periods of supervised and unsupervised physical activity.

This study compared selected parameters of fitness in 42 adults with physical disabilities, ages 19--84 years, attending a community college test site (CTS) Adapted Physical Education (APE) program. The purpose was threefold: (a) compare the participants' detraining in cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and flexibility; (b) compare the participants' physical activity adherence; and (c) describe the participants' reasons for their participation and non-participation during a 30-day supervised physical activity period and 30-day unsupervised period.;Results indicated: (a) no significant detraining; (b) significant decreases in adherence to established exercise habits, strength and flexibility; and non-significant decreases in cardiorespiratory activities during an unsupervised period; (c) reasons cited for participation were economics, scheduled workouts and accessible equipment. Reasons for non-participation were lack of knowledge, equipment and facilities.
