A landscape ecology approach to functionality-based riparian classification and land-use planning.

In riparian studies, classification models do not adequately address riparian corridors in developed areas, and do not provide a truly holistic analysis of how their functions and components are linked with the surrounding landscape. Furthermore, very few classification models are computerized, or allow maps of the final results to be easily created. Through this study, a functionality-based riparian classification model was created for a riparian corridor in a developed area. The model was based on landscape ecology and physical geography principles, including spatial patterns of land use, ecosystem interactions within the landscape, and both the horizontal and longitudinal expanse of the riparian corridor.; A point-based attribute scoring system was developed to collect data on attributes contributing to physical, biological, and chemical riparian functions. A GIS database and maps were created to analyze these data and holistically evaluate the types of functions the riparian area could perform within the context of the total landscape. The model is divided into four phases which may be performed selectively, depending on the information desired by the user.; Results of the classification included identification of potential riparian functions, functioning status, longitudinal connection within the corridor and impacts to riparian areas from improperly functioning upstream areas, potential land-use limitations within the corridor, and prioritization of riparian areas for restoration activities.
