Making the transition to rural nursing practice: The experiences of graduate nurses.

This study explored graduate nurses' experiences of their transition from student to practicing RN in a rural hospital. Of particular interest was stresses and challenges encountered, factors that contributed to or detracted from the nurses' ability to transition, and educational and organizational support that would have facilitated the transition process. Data collection was accomplished through focus group and individual interviews. Perceptions of the transition experience were influenced by role expectations, the quality of nursing education and hospital orientation programs, and relationships with coworkers. The nurses recommended expanded clinical experiences in nursing school and formal mentoring programs as strategies to assist with the transition process. Study results did not support the belief that the transition process is an overall negative experience. Participants credited much of their success in assuming their staff nurse role to personal commitment and perseverance.
