Modern secure hashing algorithms are critically important to the integrity and non-repudiation of information and data in many different computer systems. Recently, cryptographic research has exposed weaknesses in the two most widely implemented secure hash algorithms, MDS and the current United States standard SHA-1. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) created a competition to select the next secure hashing algorithm (SHA) standard which will be called SHA-3. The submitted candidates to the NIST SHA-3 competition are studied in order to understand construction properties and security requirement that are of concern for computer scientists and engineers that will be required to implement these types of secure hash algorithms in the future. Benchmarks are also submitted to the eBACS project utilizing modern IntelRTM microprocessors.
