Analysis of micro-crack formation in variable polarity plasma arc welds of 2195 aluminum-lithium alloy.

摘要

The 2195 aluminum-lithium (Al-Li) alloy is a new generation of structural material. Prior research has shown that different filler wire compositions can influence nucleation and propagation of cracks in 2195 Al-Li alloy welds.; The effects of different filler wire composition on weld defects, such as porosity and solid-state micro-crack, were reviewed as a part of this study. In addition, the effects of thermal treatment and temperature on the dynamics of micro-crack formation during welding were investigated. The results of this study provide a better understanding of the effects of filler wire composition on the failure mechanisms of welds and their mechanical properties.; Hot-stage optical microscopy, standard optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy were utilized to examine various surface defects and fractures in 2195 Al-Li alloy welds. These methods aided in the investigation of surface and bulk morphology of the welds under different conditions and ultimately led to the selection of proper filler compounds.
