The cost of lighting impacts plant operating cost and the cost of manufactured products. An energy effective lighting system is essential to the management of an industrial plant. Incandescent lighting can provide the system of choice from a conservation standpoint. Fluorescents are the most popular source of lighting in commercial and industrial applications. During the 1970s, the industry reacted quickly to develop a reduced-energy lamp for most fluorescent circuits. Today, there are many types of compact fluorescent lamps. The use of compact lamps, which utilize electronic circuitry, provides the light output of a standard 75 W incandescent lamp using only 18 W of power.; The light output and life of incandescent filament lamps are critically affected by the impressed voltage. Light output for magnetic ballasts varies approximately in direct proportion to the applied voltage. Thus a 1% increase in applied voltage will increase the light output by 1% and, conversely, a decrease of 1% in the applied voltage will reduce the light output by 1%. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
