摘要

A wireless sensor node should be designed considering the factors such as power consumption, cost, range, robustness, ease of installation etc. Considering all these factors, a low cost low power sensor based on IEEE-1451 is designed and prototyped in this thesis using chipcon receivers and RF-PIC transmitters. It consists of 3 sensor nodes (Temperature, Illumination and switch) and a gateway. The software is developed using PIC-C, with a simple and portable code that can be used for different sensors with subtle changes to it. This greatly reduces the development time of the node. The prototype is tested for its effectiveness as a smart sensor and viable applications of such low cost wireless solutions are also discussed. By limiting the functions of a sensing node to sensing, signal conditioning and transmitting, the complexity of the design and power dissipation are greatly reduced and hence cost of the sensor system is minimal.
