The history of the Bank for International Settlements, 1930 to 1958.

This dissertation aims to fill a wide gap in the literature on international financial institutions by presenting an analytical history of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) between 1930 and 1958. It argues that analysis of the evolution of the BIS offers a powerful vantage point from which to comprehend deeper changes in the global political economy over the course of the twentieth century. Examination of the BIS provides insight into not only how and why the current system for governing global finance is not entirely novel but also how and why the activities of the central and commercial bankers who supported the BIS from the late 1920s to the late 1950s have influenced the development of global finance in recent decades. This dissertation is based on a wide range of previously unstudied archival sources, including documentation from the BIS Archive, BIS member central banks and private collections.
