The removal of chloride (Cl) and potassium (K) compounds from kraft mill liquors is essential for minimizing the effects of these compounds on the recovery process, particularly on recovery boiler operation. The removal can be attained by treating the electrostatic precipitator (ESP) ash from the recovery boiler, which is enriched in Cl and K.; This study investigates factors affecting Cl and K removal from ESP ash by leaching. The results showed that the removal efficiency was affected by the degree of Cl and K dissolution in water and the degree of separation of the solids from the ash slurry. The degree of separation was lowered as the CO3 content in the ash, and the slurry concentration increased. The degree of Cl and K dissolution was affected only by slurry concentration.
