A twospan concrete girder bridge off ramp was recently constructed along Highway 89 in Farmington, Utah as part of the Shepard Lane reconstruction project. Each span of the bridge is 48 meters long and contains 10 concrete girders. The girders are skewed over the bent, making the deck of the bridge have a slight curve. Testing of this bridge provided an opportunity to analyze the bridge's natural frequencies and mode shapes using a sinusoidal forced vibration. An eccentric mass-shaking machine was bolted to the deck of the bridge at three-quarter span. Two frequency sweeps were conducted, one in the transverse direction and the other at a 45-degree angle to the transverse direction. Data was collected with 36 seismometers and three accelerometers. The instruments were strategically positioned along the deck of the bridge and bent in locations which would help capture the mode shapes of the bridge. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
