Risk management: A study of current practices at North Carolina's private colleges and universities.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact September 11, 2001 (herein referred to as September 11 or 9-11) had on risk management practices at North Carolina's private colleges and universities. A five-part survey was mailed to all North Carolina private colleges that were members of the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities Association (NCICU). The survey sought to gain information regarding risk management practices before and after September 11 relating to best risk practices, business risk practices, and basic collegiate risk practices. A fourth section sought to identify factors that drive risk management decisions, and the final section sought general or demographic information. This was a descriptive study of the population. Surveys were mailed to chief fiscal officers or presidents at all 36 North Carolina private colleges and universities. One of the basic assumptions of the study was that colleges and universities were committed to their missions and were continuously seeking to reduce or eliminate threats to the mission. This assumption invited a best practices approach since all institutions of higher learning have similar missions. The study provides a summary of risk management practices employed by the colleges and universities and the major gaps or voids in their procedures. Lastly, the research sets the stage for further research and more detailed study in the area of risk management in higher education.
