shk1 was identified in a P element screen for male sterility (Castrillon et al. 1993). In this study, shk is shown to be essential for GSC self-renewal in the Drosophila ovary through repressing a bam-dependent differentiation pathway.; ses1 mutant was, identified from a female sterile screen carried out in our laboratory. Ses encodes a novel protein, which has a ring-finger domain at its C terminus and also a putative nuclear localization signal. In my study, I show that the ses mutant germaria have less cysts than wild type ones. Ses is a nuclear protein and is expressed in both germline and somatic cells of the germarium. The ring-finger domain of Ses has ubiquitin ligase activity in vitro.
