The motivation behind this work was that of simulating Mach flight combustor inlet conditions so as to facilitate controlled, ground-level testing of systems such as air breathing engines and ramjet engines. The method chosen to duplicate the stagnation enthalpy of air at the required flight conditions was that of the combustion of hydrogen in air with make-up oxygen. A primary concern in the design of this air vitiation system was the minimization of water vapor as a pollutant in the product air. To address this design constraint, various injector types and injection patterns were employed in investigating sustained combustion in a hydrogen-lean environment.; This research effort involved the design, fabrication, testing and evaluation of several injector configurations combining gaseous hydrogen, gaseous oxygen and air. Experiments revealed that pairing impinging propellant injectors with impinging air injectors led to combustion stagnation temperatures that agreed with theory within 2 % and 15 %.
