This study was designed to examine and analyze the work of William Edward Burghardt (W.E.B.) DuBois from the perspective of educational philosophy. More specifically, it considers writings from the first stage of his career as an intellectual as a platform for the philosophy of education.;This study is historical in that it involves an analysis of DuBois's life and events which contributed to shaping an educational perspective that came to be reflected in his written work. The study's predominant thrust, however, is philosophical in that it discusses what will be termed "DuBoisian" philosophy---that is a philosophy synthesized through historical, political and biographical lenses.;The conclusions of the study are: (1) That DuBois considered educational philosophy in the form of discussion about the relationship of education (literacy) and empowerment in his career than has been previously thought. (2) That elements and sources of DuBois's educational philosophy did not begin with the publication of "The Talented Tenth" or The Souls of Black Folk , rather the aforementioned works completed the initial phase of the development of his educational thought. (3) That previous omission of DuBois's early contributions to educational thought not only ignores DuBois's discussion of the benefits of literacy and empowerment, but also ignore the relationship of education to quality of life and the development of a leadership elite.
