摘要

WaterOne, (Water District No. 1 of Johnson County, Kansas), has experienced continuous and rapid growth since its' inception in 1957. This growth has brought about major changes in the main service area, including both expansion of the geographic area of the system and increased demands. These changes have eliminated the usefulness of the existing elevated storage on the main system as a result of the higher pressures required to serve the most distant reaches of the system. The three elevated tanks had to be retired from service, since the required pressure to operate the system kept them full at all times, eliminating the "turnover" necessary to maintain the required disinfectant residual.rnThe absence of elevated storage on the main system resulted in a "closed" system which created difficulties with pressure control but also could result in sudden loss of pressure in parts of the system in the event of major pumping equipment failure, large line breaks, or power outages. Although closed systems are not unusual, particularly with larger systems that have outgrown their elevated storage, the associated problems caused an examination of alternatives. The principal cause of concern was loss of pressure during these events which could result in system contamination. This paper shows how WaterOne is handling this problem.
