A PROPOSAL FOR A NEW TYPE OF PRECAST BRIDGE DECK CONNECTION

As the number of deteriorated bridges worldwide increases, the importance ofrnmaintenance and replacement of existing bridges are being emphasized. Cast-in-placernconcrete deck which is mainly applied to deck replacement of existing bridges havernproblems such as deterioration by initial crack, labor cost increase, difficulties ofrnmaintenance and replacement, and construction time increase. On the contrary, arnprecast concrete deck is considered as an effective alternative because of its qualityrnassurance and fast construction. For precast concrete deck system, structuralrnperformance, economic feasibility and constructability are mostly determined by thernconnection methods between the precast deck panels. Post-tensioning and looprnconnection, two most commonly used connection methods so far, however, havernlimitations of high construction cost of prestressing work and the relatively low durabilityrnperformance of precast deck joint respectively. Therefore, this study proposes a new typernof precast bridge deck connection which is more improved than existing bridge deck jointsrnand verifies its flexural strength by evaluating results of various parameter tests.
