Under a joint US-Hungarian R&D project financed by thernNATO Science for Peace Programme an innovative zeoliternmodification method and a wastewater treatment technologyrnbased on the application of zeolite modified with cation activernpolyelectrolyte (CAP) were developed between 1999 andrn2002 [1].rnIn order to determine the chemical composition and thernstability of the CAP modified zeolite (SMZ), as well asrnpredict its effects on the biological treatment of wastewater,rntotal organic carbon (TOC), Fourier transform infrared (IR)rnspectroscopic measurements, as well as laboratory and pilotrnscale biological degradability tests were carried out.rnThe data of TOC and IR measurements showed that usingrnthe patented zeolite modification method 1-3 mg CAP couldrnbe chemically attached to the surface of 1 g natural zeoliternof 100 μm grain size. The stability test of SMZ showed thatrn93 % of the CAP-zeolites bonds remained stable at even pHrn9 after 3 days.rnThe pilot scale experiments in harmony with the laboratoryrnones applying SMZ resulted in significantly better effluentrnwater quality and verified that SMZ additive was capable tornincrease the capacity of WTPs expressed in chemical oxygenrndemand (5-40%), biochemical oxygen demand (50-40%),rnorganic nitrogen removal (40-70%), ammonical-nitrogenrnremoval (50-80%), phosphorous removal (15-20%) andrnsuspended solids removal (30-40%).
