The purpose of this study was to evaluate both lumbar posture and lumbar overload of people handling children in cribs, through analyses of trunk angles and horizontal distances between children and childcare assistants (the 5th woman percentile and 95th man percentile of Brazilian population). The maximum angle limits for bending the trunk were surpassed for both percentiles in all lifting postures. When the crib adjustment was set to its highest position (used for babies up to five months), only the 95th man percentile presented lumbar overload. But when it was set to its lowest position (children up to 2 years old) both 95th man percentile and 5th woman percentile presented lumbar overload, when compared to NIOSH limits.
