IEEE 802.11a and 802.11g access points (APs) currently operate as a hub, with users alternating airtime. Space-Division Multiple-Access (SDMA) and slot allocation can be utilized to enable multiple simultaneous users to transmit or receive data in the same frequency band, operating more like a switch. The modified first fit (MFF) dynamic slot allocation algorithm achieves superior performance to fixed-user-per-slot allocation techniques, while having significantly less computational complexity than conventional dynamic slot algorithms because it eliminates the need to compute the output SINR. The IEEE 802.11a/g standards are simulated to evaluate the performance of the algorithms for an 802.11-compatible implementation. Simulation results show that the SINR gain and throughput rate can be improved when using an SDMA-enabled 802.11 AP and dynamic slot allocation.
