There is a need to accurately and robustly simulate the hydrologic response of large catchments where insufficient data exist for detailed model calibration. Our research is aimed at development of a robust two-dimensional hydrologic modeling capability for forecasting stages (depths), discharges, and velocities along rivers and streams using a minimum of input data. The two-dimensional, physically-based, distributed-parameter Gridded Surface-Subsurface Hydrologic Analysis model accurately predicts runoff when sufficient data exist for model calibration and verification. However, when required calibration data do not exist or are unavailable, the assignment of meaningful parameter values is practically impossible for all model parameters. Given this fact, it is relevant to consider conceptualizations of the most uncertain portions of the hydrologic cycle while retaining physics-based approaches where most applicable.
