In the last years the number of decentralised grid-connected PV systems has skyrocketed. This increase wasbrought about by means of a wide variety of financial incentives as dissemination strategies launched bydifferent organizations and institutions: Governmental bodies on national and local levels, electric utilities, andNGOs. In this paper the most important strategies are evaluated. The most important conclusions are (i) Purecost-effectiveness is not crucial for private customers. Affordability is rather what counts; (ii) Comprehensiveaccompanied information and education activities are important; (iii) financial incentives must decrease overtime; (iv) they should take into account consumers' willingness to pay (WTP); ideal financial incentivesprovide only the difference between the system costs and the WTP for PV.
