An innovative ion-implantation coating method was developed to synthesize sandwich-structured TiO2/Cr/TiO2 thin film applicable to visible-light-assisted photocatalysis. In this investigation, the photocatalytic thin film was characterized by DSC-TG, XRD, TEM, and UV-Vis spectra. The characterization by UV-Vis spectra showed that the presence of the Cr ion layer yielded an extension of the light absorption spectrum beyond UV to the visible range. The effectiveness of using the TiO2/Cr/TiO2 thin film to decolorize anthraquinonic dye Acid Blue 80 was evaluated experimentally. The experimental results showed that the TiO2/Cr/TiO2 thin film could perform both UVA-assisted and visible-light-assisted photocatalytic decolorization of dye. This investigation demonstrates the promise of cost-effective solar photocatalytic decolorization of dye for treatment of textile effluent.
