Nanosized Copper Powders Prepared by the Gel-Casting Method and its Application in Lubrication Oils

Superfine copper powders were prepared by a gel-casting method using copper nitrate, acrylamide (AM) and N,N-methylene double acrylamide (MBAM) as the main raw materials. The as-prepared copper powders were added into an industrial white oil to evaluate its lubrication properties. The test results show that the copper powders prepared are of high purity, fine dispersibility with mean particle size about 50nm and a narrow particle size distribution. The nanosized copper powder was well dispersed in the lubrication oil. The addition of the copper powders obvious improves the tribological performances of the lubrication oil owing to its good self-repairing performance. At a load of 292N, rotational velocity of 500 r/min and test time of 30 min, the friction coefficient is 0.07 and near no wear scratches were found, with an addition of 0.6 nanosized copper in the oil.
