Information, Organization, and System Functioning

摘要

The modem approach to the development of computer software, as well as to human-computer interaction demands better understanding of information processes. For example, billions are spent each year on software, but many systems that are built are never used, and at least one third of systems begun are abandoned before completion. The main goal of this paper is to show how the general theory of information helps to achieve better understanding of information processes in different systems, including human information systems. After considering contemporary situation in information studies, elements of the general theory of information are discussed as well as its comparison with other directions in information sciences is made. This theory provides means for the discovery of previously unknown types of information. The role of information in system functioning in general and organization formation, development, and transformation, in particular, is analyzed. The results are aimed at human information processing.
