If detected early, glaucoma can be cured. Given this fact, early detection of this condition is a necessity in today's world. Since ophthalmologists are not always readily available (especially in the remote areas of the developing countries), an automated screening mechanism that recognizes the basic characteristics of this eye disease is helpful. In this work, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based tool for early detection of glaucoma is presented. Various data collected from a patient such as age, race and intraocular pressure are used as input for the ANN. The accuracy of the network was tested with a set of patterns that the network had never encountered before. The results obtained indicated that it is possible to develop an ANN base tool for early detection of glaucoma.
