Semi-automatic Object-based Video Manipulations for Post-production and Video Editing Applications

This paper presents a method which allows the creation of realistic mosaic images from an original video sequences or a set of still pictures. The proposed approach is based on the use of a semi-automatic object-based segmentation method (rotoscopy) in order to extract from the original sequence the fixed background of the scene acquired with a moving camera. The extracted sequence of background images is therefore used to create a mosaic or a sequence of mosaic images if the background is not really fixed In order to obtain realistic images, new techniques are proposed in order to compensate, in the mosaic images, the illumination variations existing in the original images. Finally, the mosaic images are used to perform some modifications of the original images, such as the modification of the camera displacement or format conversion. The proposed method has been tested on typical video sequences used in the post-production world.
