Heuristic Optimization Algorithms for Distribution Network Planning with Reliability Criteria

MV distribution networks constitute the backbone of power distribution systems and for this reason utilities justifiably strive to improve their performance. In the paper heuristic algorithms and methodologies for the optimal planning of MV "open loop" networks are used. Furthermore, an original algorithm for the optimal location of automatic switching devices in such networks is presented. It is also shown that service reliability can be drastically improved by using automatic network reconfiguration.
