Using Sea Winds Resolution Enhanced Images for Large Scale Monitoring of the Earth's Surface

As interest increases in monitoring our global environment, new technologies are becoming more useful in these studies. Space-borne scatterometers can be effective tools for large scale monitoring of the Earth's surface. However, their low resolution can limit the utility of the data. Thus, there is interest in resolution enhancement methods that can create high resolution imagery from scatterometer measurements. Some sample results from SeaWinds on QuikScat are presented based on applying the Scatterometer Image Reconstruction with Filtering (SIRF) algorithm. The SIRF algorithm is reviewed briefly. SeaWinds is the next generation of Ku-band scatterometers and will play an important role in monitoring the Earth.
