This paper is concerned with the methodology of optimization of parallel programs that implement computations of the electromagnetic field propagation using the FDTD method. Optimization is done with the use of parallel program design supporting tool - VAMPIR monitor. This tool enables a detailed analysis of a parallel program behavior including its constituent communication. The analysis permits to discover the weak points of a parallel program design and to introduce changes in the communication characteristics and the program structure, which aim in improvements of program execution efficiency. The paper presents an outline of the VAMPIR monitor technical features. Then it shows how to combine an application program in C with MPI and VAMPIR monitor instructions to organize program execution trace registration and visualization of desired program execution events. Next, the use of VAMPIR monitor for optimization of the parallel program design is shown on an example of the FDTD parallel program implementation.
