CMMI: A New Catalyst for the Software Community

The paper will discuss the new Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) standard, which is replacing existing paradigms about development capability and organizational maturity. As software customers and suppliers transition to the new model, it will dramatically influence the culture of software practice. However, many experienced software professionals question the value of the new standard, and even whether software process maturity concepts have produced the positive effects claimed, or have had unexpected detriments. The paper will examine the software community's changing perceptions of maturity and the impact of the maturity movement on the software community.
