This paper presents an object-oriented model for context in medical imaging that can be used by different components. The context model is an implementation of the Observer pattern with four main types of context: user context, patient context, hardware context and image context. The user context refers to the operator, who can assume several roles (researcher, administrator, etc). The patient context keeps information about the patient (as name and age). The hardware context keeps information related to the local machine and the image context has information related to the image characteristics (the image is supposed to be a DICOM image) as bits allocated, columns, rows, etc. One of the uses of the context model is a contextual viewer, which is able to change its appearance and functions based on contextual information, and can also aggregate new related information from distributed databases.
