In this paper, power transfer capacity is investigated for systems with UPFC (Unified Power Flow Controller). The effects of equipment constraints, the system topologies, and locations of UPFC on the UPFC real power transfer are discussed. The P-Q characteristics of UPFC operation under different constraints are determined. The admissible operational ranges of UPFC control outputs (which are the magnitude and phase angle of series injected voltage) are discussed and the maximum power transfer and the maximum admissible range of power flow change are also studied.
