The paper discusses the genesis vis-a-vis magnitude and seriousness of the problem of extraction of standing pillars and the necessity for their early extraction. It reviews the methods adopted so far in India to extract standing pillars and the need for further exploring new technology. Finally, an effort has been made to outline the salient features of some of the emerging technologies / methods and their suitability in Indian conditions such as blasting gallery, short wall mining with powered supports and continuous miners, short longwall mining with longwall equipment and short longwall with continuous miner and breaker line mobile roof supporting system.
