International Energy Agency Hydrogen Implementing AgreementPast, Present and Second Generation Hydrogen R, D&D

The Hydrogen Implementing Agreement (HIA) has provided a very active, 'task-shared'platform for practical co-operation for 25 years. The HIA has just completed itsmost recent five year IEA term. Fourteen countries are now HIA members. Yet again asmany countries have indicated their interest in joining. Member country experts performR,D&D activities.Activities are organized in tasks or Annexes to the Implementing Agreement. To date,13 Tasks have been completed. They deal with the full range of hydrogen research anddevelopment from production through applications. The resulting reports andpublications are available on the web:http://www.eere.energy.gov/hydrogenandfuelcells/hydrogen/iea (please note that thisaddress is expected to change soon). The five active HIA tasks concern:?Photoelectrolytic hydrogen production;?(Photo) biological production;?Hydrogen from carbon containing materials;?Storage; and?Integrated SystemsIn addition to these five active tasks, new tasks and subtasks, including joint activitieswith other Implementing Agreements and more intensive contacts with the private sector,are in preparation and under consideration. Furthermore, a view has been developed onopportunities for R&D subjects that will additionally guide our new initiatives.The greatly increased interest in hydrogen energy necessitates intensified national andinternational cooperation. The Hydrogen Implementing Agreement, under the umbrellaof the IEA, has proven to be an effective vehicle. Therefore, interested new countries arecordially invited to join the implementing agreement and take part in the collaborativeactivities.
