With the development of society and economy, with the increase of population in Sichuan Province since the reformation and society opening, continuous decrease farmland area in Sichuan province has lower and lowers, from about 271.23 x 10 ha in 1952 to 2000, per capita farmland is less than 0.05169 ha in 2000. The potential area arable land not yet cultivated is also quite limited. Effectively protect existing cultivated land is important for the food security of Sichuan Province, and even in China. Based on the analysis of quality and quantify, the main factors having impact on the reduction of cultivated land area in Sichuan Province are as follows: proportion of nonagricultural outcome in GDP, proportion of economical crops in total area, urbanization level, investment in fixed assets, annual per capita consumption of rural residents, annual per capita consumption of urban residents and so and so forth and the amount of the reduction of cultivated land area in Sichuan Province from 1984 to 2000 are: 20.45022 x 10~4 ha, 1.62016 x 10~4 ha, 4.07985 x 10~4 ha, 2.29296 x 10~4 ha, 21.92718 x 10~4 ha, 0.931122 x 10~4 ha, respectively and the annual per capita consumption of rural residents could lead to increase the amount of cultivated land area in same period. The major strategies for protection cultivated land have been proposed.
