The nuclear option is increasingly considered in the energy strategy of more and more countries in the world. The reasons are replacement of old nuclear power plants, reducing green house gas emissions demanded by the Kyoto Protocol and equal or lower overall cost of a nuclear plant compared to conventional plants. Besides building a new nuclear power plant the other option is the life time extension of nuclear power plants by upgrade of the steam turbine turboset. This brings about a comprehensive increase in the efficiency of steam turbine plants. The development of numerical processes and high-performance computer systems has made it possible to simulate the most complex aspects of three-dimensional flow, and these simulations have in turn made it possible to implement the further advances made in the past several decades with the aid of equally advanced manufacturing processes in the production of turbine blades as well as turbine inlet and exhaust casings Concerning the primary part of the nuclear power plant efforts were undertaken to improve power output, efficiency and safety systems of the reactor. On the secondary side Siemens has performed an intensive development for new apparatus and upgrade nuclear steam turbosets. The main tasks that will be presented here are: Development of a suitable turbo-set for upgrade solutions and highest power output needs for new apparatus projects ( > 1700 MWel). Efficiency increase by modern blade profile, blade path and turbine design. Design features to achieve a lifetime of up to 60 years of nuclear plant operation.
